Whether you are a professional working in the oil and gas industry or a consumer; some of these facts about the oil and gas industry might surprise you.

  • In China, the first recorded natural gas pipelines were made of bamboo around 500 A.D.   The natural gas helped boil sea water to separate the salt from the water.
  • Natural gas was first discovered in America in 1626 when French explorers saw the natives igniting natural gas that was seeping near Lake Erie. In 1821, William Hart dug the first successful natural gas well in the United States in Fredonia, New York.
  • Before Edwin Drake drilled America's first commercial oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania, in 1859, the Native Americans in that area had been using the oil from oil seeps for several centuries for things such as ointments, insect repellent and religious ceremonies.
  • According to a recent Forbes article, in the United States alone, the length of the natural gas pipelines could go from the Earth to the moon seven or eight times.
  • Many products are derived from crude oil, including synthetic fabrics, plastics, furniture, insulation, flooring, pharmaceuticals and more. Products including Vaseline petroleum jelly and Maybelline mascara were originally developed from the byproducts of the early Pennsylvania oil fields.

These are just some fun facts about the oil and gas industry of which we are a part.
